Anything that reaches the structure gets measured on computerized equipment against factory specification before cosmetic work is scheduled. Cars with air suspension add their own alignment and ride-height considerations once the structure is back to spec.
Glass and Panel Alignment
Windshield replacement is a documented recalibration trigger. On an older car, panel gaps and closure alignment also need setting to specification rather than to whatever the previous repair left behind, which is a common find on a Model S with history.
Recalibration Is Part of the Repair
The Model S reads the road through cameras behind the windshield, cameras in the B-pillars, repeaters in the front fenders, a rear camera, and on many cars ultrasonic sensors in the fascias. Most of those sit behind a panel that collisions damage. Move one by a degree or two and the vehicle reports no fault, drives normally, and is measuring lane position and following distance against the wrong reference. On an aluminum structure that is not a preference: alloy grade and panel thickness determine how a section absorbs load, and a part that fits is not the same as a part that behaves correctly.
